World Youth Day seeks support from mature age Australians

World Youth Day Sydney 2008 (WYD08) is getting in the spirit of NSW Seniors Week, inviting them to join the WYD08 family.

Mature age members of the community - including those in aged-care facilities and hospitals - are asked to help engage the young people in their lives and offer their prayerful support for those actively preparing for WYD08.

More than 125,000 registered international pilgrims and 100,000 domestic pilgrims are expected to take part when Sydney hosts the 23rd WYD from 15 - 20 July this year.

"World Youth Day presents an opportunity like no other to inspire and engage our younger generation," said WYD08 Coordinator Bishop Anthony Fisher OP.

"In sharing their own wisdom and life experiences, mature age Australians have a valuable contribution to make towards inspiring greater peace, understanding and compassion in young people," he said.

"We ask them to pray for our young people and encourage their attendance at World Youth Day."

There are many ways that mature age Australians can offer their support.

1. Pray for WYD08 and the young people participating

2. Become a HomeStay Host: accommodate pilgrims in your home during the WYD08 week

3. Volunteer for WYD08: positions are available during the event week

4. Purchase a WYD08 Gift Voucher to help a loved one attend WYD08

5. Sponsor a pilgrim from Oceania or a remote Australian indigenous community through the Pilgrim Partnership Support Program

More information about each of these points is available at www.wyd2008.org

Whilst WYD participants are typically between 16 - 35 years, WYD08 organisers are seeking representatives from all age groups and backgrounds to contribute and help renew the Church and society in Australia.

Hosted by the Catholic Church but open to all, WYD08 will mark the first visit by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI to Australia.

Only 102 days to go to WYD08!
