Country classifications
The pricing structure ensures that pilgrims from more affluent nations, including Australian pilgrims, share in a reasonable part of the costs of WYD08 and support pilgrims from less affluent nations.
Package prices have been based on the relative gross national income per capita of each country, as determined by the World Bank (a United Nations specialised agency). So the way your country has been classified by the World Bank will determine the price you will pay for the registration package you select.
Country classifications have been created based on information published by the World Bank in its - World Bank list of economies (July 2006). You can see the UN/World Bank source list of countries with their classifications
here
.
What if my country is not listed in the Country Classifications?
Not every country has been listed in the list of country classifications. If your country does not appear, please contact us for confirmation of the pricing which applies to your country at

|
These prices do not include airfares or other costs of transportation to and from Australia. The following principles have been applied to our pricing packages:
- A higher contribution* will be made by pilgrims from the higher income nations
- There will be significant price reductions* for pilgrims from low income countries
- We have attempted to ensure that pilgrims from lower middle income countries contribute no more than they were asked to contribute in 2005
- Visas for registered WYD08 pilgrims will be free of Government charges to all registered WYD08 pilgrims and there will be no visa quota applied to any country
* when compared with pricing for WYD 2005, Cologne
The Pontifical Council for the Laity endorsed the structure in October 2006.
The Solidarity Fund
- Pilgrims area encouraged to contribute to the Solidarity Fund. The entire amount of the Solidarity Fund collected from the Australian and New Zealand pilgrims will be applied to reduce the contribution requested of pilgrims from middle and low income countries in Oceania. We hope this will encourage and assist as many people as possible from Oceania to attend the first World Youth Day ever held in this region.
- The Pontifical Council for the Laity in Rome (PCL) is administering the Solidarity Fund contributions received from all other pilgrims. The fund contributions are used to subsidise the travel expenses of young people from other continents coming from countries undergoing economic or political difficulties. Request for financial aid will be considered if they are presented to the PCL by bishops' conferences or dioceses with the bishops' signature, or by international movements, associations and communities with the international president's signature.
