HomeStay FAQs

What is HomeStay?

HomeStay is a program that will accommodate thousands World Youth Day 2008 (WYD08) pilgrims in homes across Sydney in the week from Monday 14 July 2008 (in) to Monday 21 July (out).

Homestay Hosts will provide bed and breakfast to pilgrims from overseas or from other parts of Australia (ie, outside Sydney). It will be managed at the parish level through local coordinators.

Who will take part?

HomeStay Hosts include all Homestay Hosts who will generally host two or more pilgrims.

Do I have to be Catholic?

No. Many HomeStay Hosts will be Catholic parishioners but many will also be members of service clubs such as Apex, Rotary or Lions - or just generous members of the community who want to play a valuable role in the biggest event staged in Australia.

Who will organise HomeStay?

A HomeStay coordinator based in each parish will coordinate the involvement of hosts in the program in conjunction with the World Youth Day 2008 organisers.

What do I have to do?

Simply apply online at www.wyd2008.org /homestay

What happens once I put in my application?

A HomeStay coordinator will contact you to arrange a meeting at your house. Your application, council rates, or lease and household insurance policy will be verified by the HomeStay Coordinator to ensure we meet our legal requirements.

How long will pilgrims stay at my home?

Pilgrims could stay up to seven nights, however you can request to identify in and out dates in your application.

Where do I have to live to participate?

You must be based in the Greater Sydney area, from Berowra in the north, Penrith and Campbelltown in the west, Waterfall in the south and all parishes in the east. As a general rule, pilgrims should be able to travel no more than one hour by public transport to the main WYD08 events in the CBD.

I don't own the house I live in, can I participate?

Yes.

What are my responsibilities as a HomeStay host?

When you host the pilgrims, you will need to provide: a bedroom or space on the floor for a sleeping bag and a daily breakfast to each pilgrim.

You will sign an agreement when you become a HomeStay host, covering your commitment and the support you will receive.

Can I request a particular country or language?

Yes. Simply specify the nationality in your application and also if you speak another language. World Youth Day will try to meet your request but unfortunately cannot guarantee it will happen.

When will I know which pilgrims will be staying with me?

Matching of pilgrims and hosts will commence in April 2008, which will enable the host and pilgrim to be in contact before the event. Hosts will be advised of pilgrims details and when they are arriving and departing Sydney.

Do I need to pick up the pilgrims from the airport or bus station?

No. Pilgrims and hosts will meet at the Parish hall within an agreed fixed time period. The host's private address will not be given to the pilgrims prior to arrival.
