World Youth Day 2008 program detailed

Times and details of the major events at World Youth Day Sydney 2008 (WYD08) in July have been confirmed today.

WYD08 organisers also unveiled the name that will be used to identify the joint venues hosting the Evening Vigil and Final Mass with Pope Benedict XVI.

Royal Randwick Racecourse and nearby Centennial Park will be united in name as the Southern Cross Precinct during World Youth Day.

Sydney will host the 23rd World Youth Day from 15 - 20 July this year. It will be the largest event Australia has hosted and will mark the first visit by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI to Australia.

Bishops endorse World Youth Day preparations

The Catholic Bishops of Australia this week gave a resounding endorsement to the plans and preparations for the forthcoming World Youth Day celebrations.

The Australian Catholic Bishops Conference (ACBC) is currently in session for its bi-annual meeting and were fully briefed on progress regarding World Youth Day.

"We have all been delighted by the engagement of the Church throughout Australia, especially our young people, as well as the wider community, in the pastoral preparations for World Youth Day," said Archbishop Philip Wilson, President of the ACBC. "The Journey of the World Youth Day Cross, Icon and Indigenous Message Stick have drawn extraordinary crowds and been a very moving experience for those who have attended them."

"The progress of the World Youth Day Cross around our country has been a premonition of the extraordinary grace that is to come this July when the youth of the world and the Holy Father, gather with the Australian Church and community for the celebrations in Sydney," he said.

"The briefings we received this week confirmed our confidence that the work of the World Youth Day team - in collaboration with all levels of Church, government and business - will yield much fruit in the lives of the young pilgrims and in the renewal of our Church and community," the Archbishop said.

"The Bishops of Australia look forward to welcoming the Holy Father and the young people of the world in July. We call on all Australian youth to register now as pilgrims so they can take part in this wonderful celebration. We also invite people to share in the joy of this occasion by becoming World Youth Day volunteers, offering hospitality through the HomeStay programme, and attending the public events such as the Final Mass."

The ACBC comprises the archbishops, bishops and auxiliary bishops of Australia's 28 geographical dioceses, the military diocese, and the four Eastern Rite dioceses. Representative leaders of religious institutes, as well as the newly appointed Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Giuseppe Lazzarotto, were also in attendance at this week's meeting.

Archbishop Lazzarotto commented on the excitement of the Holy Father about coming to WYD in Sydney and praised "the extraordinary efforts you are all making to prepare for his visit and for the celebration of the World Youth Day."

Telstra answers the call - Pope to send daily text messages to young people during World Youth Day

In a World Youth Day first, Pope Benedict XVI will send text messages of hope and inspiration directly to pilgrims, reaching young people in their social space.

The service will be made possible by Telstra, announced today as the official telecommunications partner of World Youth Day 2008 (WYD08).

"We wanted to make WYD08 a unique experience by using new ways to connect with today's tech-savvy youth," said WYD08 Coordinator, Bishop Anthony Fisher OP.

"Our partnership with Telstra will help us do that."

Telstra will provide voice, data, mobile, broadband and broadcast services to WYD08, connecting 8000 volunteers, 2000 clergy, 3000 media and an anticipated 225,000 pilgrims to more than 700 locations around the greater Sydney area.

"Telstra's involvement will ensure that WYD08 will be the most innovative World Youth Day to date," Bishop Fisher said.

One-of-a-kind Telstra services planned for WYD08 include:

� Daily inspirational text messages from Pope Benedict XVI

� Digital Prayer Walls at event sites

� Hosting the official WYD08 online social networking site, XT3.com

� Telstra precincts - on the ground interactive centre?s including wireless internet, green screen studios, commemorative WYD08 photo messaging and music downloads.

� Next G (TM) Regional Catechesis webcasting

Mr Michael Rocca, Telstra Group Managing Director Telstra Networks and Services, said Telstra was the only provider in Australia with the proven size, scale and innovation to deliver these services to WYD08.

"Just as we did for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, 2003 Rugby World Cup and the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games, Telstra will bring participants closer to the event through new media and telecommunications services, allowing youth to interact with WYD08 events," he said.

"We are thrilled to be a part of this major global event and we are happy to be providing world class telecommunications to WYD08 participants and organisers," he said.

World Youth Day Cross will share the Spirit of Tasmania

For the first time since arriving in Australia in July 2007, the World Youth Day Cross and Icon leave the mainland to share the spirit of World Youth Day with Australia's island state.

Highlights of the week will include:

Spirit of Tasmania Arrival & Welcome to Country: Sunday 11 May 2008

At 7.00am the World Youth Day Cross and Icon will arrive in Tasmania on the Spirit of Tasmania. A celebratory breakfast will be held onboard the ship before a welcome to country takes place on the foreshore of East Devonport.

One Mass for the entire Archdiocese of Tasmania - Launceston

This will be the ONLY Mass held in Tasmania on Sunday 11 May. Organisers are expecting thousands of parishioners from around the state to celebrate Mass, the official handover of the Cross and Icon from Melbourne and the commissioning of Tasmanian pilgrims for World Youth Day Sydney 2008.

Lady Jane Franklin II Tour - Strahan: Wednesday 14 May 2008

The cruise ship will tour the Cross and Icon, local school students and invited guests around Macquarie Harbour. The tour will include travel along the Gordon River and a visit to historic Sarah Island, Tasmania's oldest convict settlement.

Risdon Prison visit - Risdon Vale: Thursday 15 May 2008

The Cross and Icon will be taken inside the Risdon Prison complex, Tasmania's only prison. Members of the prison community and World Youth Day team will share in a liturgy where Hobart's Choir of High Hopes will also perform. A procession around both the Risdon Female and Maximum Security Prisons will follow the liturgy.

Parliament House Event - Hobart: Friday 16 May 2008

Beginning on the lawns of Parliament House with an address from Tasmanian Premier The Hon Paul Lennon MP, 500 school students will process the Cross and Icon through the streets of Hobart.

Visiting a place of healing - Port Arthur: Saturday 17 May 2008

The Cross and Icon will be walked through the historic site on the Tasman Peninsula where the Port Arthur massacre took place in April 1996. The World Youth Day symbols will bring hope and healing to the site.

Around 500,000 people are expected to take part when Sydney hosts the 23rd World Youth Day from 15-20 July this year. The event will also mark the first visit to Australia by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI.
